Memorial Day Weekend is quickly approaching. If you’re choosing to stay close to home in Fort Worth, there are lots of things to do to remember what Memorial Day is truly all about: those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep our nation free.
Art and the Military at Amon Carter Museum
For centuries American artists have depicted military people and subjects in their work. Civilian artists have portrayed military themes, while military artists have depicted both military and civilian subjects. Learn about connections between paintings and sculpture in the museum’s collection and the military throughout American history. This tour includes rarely seen items from the archives.
Carry the Load Fort Worth Texas Walk
Founded in 2011 by two Veteran Navy SEALs, Carry The Load began as a 20 hour and 11 minute Memorial March in Dallas, Texas. In 2012, it expanded to include the East Coast Relay, walking from West Point, New York to Dallas, Texas throughout the month of May. The relay leg captains walk in 5 mile increments carrying the American flag to bring awareness to the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes. In 2016, Carry The Load expanded once again by adding a West Coast route from Seattle, Washington to Dallas, Texas to help engage Americans throughout the country. Join the West Coast team for an approximately 3-mile walk through Fort Worth as they finish the second to last day of their 4,300 mile trek from Seattle to Dallas. Register for this event at carrytheload.org.
Memorial Day Program at DFW National Cemetery
Capt. Jonathan R. Townsend, Commander Naval Air Station Fort Worth, will give a keynote address at this solemn Memorial Day program at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. The Waxahachie High School Wind Ensemble and the Duncanville First Baptist Worship Ministries Choir will perform patriotic selections. Other highlights include a rifle salute by soldiers from Fort Hood and a Missing Man formation fly over by the 301st Fighter Wing, 457th Fighter Squadron.
Don’t forget - Park programming is also continuing over the weekend as well! Alliance Town Center is hosting a boot camp fitness class from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Bluestem Park. Designed to build strength and endurance, this class is sponsored by Texas Health Alliance, a healthcare network that has a special program to pay respects for veterans who spend their last days at a Texas Health hospital.
From everyone at Alliance Town Center, we wish you and your family a beautiful Memorial Day weekend.
